Under the limited supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent leads, coordinates and participates in the work of crews responsible for maintaining turf and irrigation systems at all Municipal Golf Course facilities. The work involves exercising functional and technical supervision over lower-level golf course staff, operation and preventive maintenance work on a variety of specialized turf maintenance equipment and turf care systems. Employees act on their own initiative to eliminate defects when deficiencies are discovered.
A DAY IN THE LIFE:
Golf Course Maintenance Operations and Management
- Supervises, leads, plans, trains and reviews the work of a crews responsible for a comprehensive program for maintaining warm and cool season turf grasses and all related systems.
- Plans, directs, and participates in the maintenance program for natural and synthetic turf areas, irrigation systems, pest management programs, landscape areas and special projects related to the construction, renovation, and repair of turf areas.
- Plans and oversees the mowing and maintenance of natural areas, clubhouse lawns and adjacent city rights-of-way.
- Respond to the public in a courteous manner, providing information within the area of assignment.
- Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnover times, streamline work processes, work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality, seamless customer service.
- Makes recommendations for capital purchases/projects and provides input for the annual budget process.
- Professional Development: Continuously seek professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Provides snow and ice removal during inclement weather.
Oversee Turf Maintenance Operations
- Surveys turf areas to determine irrigation requirements for various growing conditions, develops an appropriate watering plan, and accurately operates, programs, or adjusts controllers for automated systems or hand waters turf as required.
- Surveys turf areas to monitor turf health and proactively develops a program for plant health protectants to maintain the desired conditions.
- Helps develop a mowing and maintenance schedule based on facility BMP guidelines. Enters information into Task Tracker digital job board system.
- Oversees and assists with mowing and maintenance tasks as needed to prepare the course for daily play, leagues and events.
- Turf-Care and Course Projects: Coordinates with the Golf Course Superintendent on turf-care practices and course-related projects.
- Collects soil samples for analysis as needed and interprets results in order to treat soil.
Oversee Equipment Maintenance
- Performs minor maintenance tasks on motorized equipment such as cleaning, greasing, sharpening blades, adjusting reels and tire repairs.
- Assists with service, diagnosis and other equipment repairs such as oil changes, changing hydraulic hoses and other parts changes as needed.
- Oversees and assists with grinding reels and bedknives of mowers for golf course and other areas.
- Inventory and Asset Management: Supervises physical inventories of equipment parts, such as filters, blades and other routinely used parts.
Manage Chemical and fertilizer applications
- Oversees the application of herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers.
- Ensures compliance with established safety procedures.
- Determines appropriate type and quantity of fertilizer and herbicide to be applied to turf.
- Operates equipment to apply chemicals and fertilizers to grass for the control of weeds, pests and grass diseases.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensures that all activities and practices meet municipal standards and regulations.
Oversee Irrigation System Maintenance
- Supervises installation, troubleshooting and repair of broken water lines, valves, and heads for sprinkling system.
- Assists with programming central irrigation computer for watering golf course.
- Assists with related work to maintain efficient operation of the field watering system, including repairs and diagnosing.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensures that all activities and practices meet municipal standards and regulations.
Oversee Maintenance Staff Management
- Performs administrative duties such as hiring of seasonal and full-time employees, recordkeeping, preparing reports, purchasing and scheduling.
- Completes annual evaluations for Golf Course Staff.
- Verifies the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications motivating employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
- Trains personnel in correct and safe operating procedures.
- Disseminates and interprets instructions provided to employees using appropriate forms of communication.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED FOR SUCCESS:
- EDUCATION:Bachelor's degree, Associate's degree, or Certificate in Agronomy, Turf Management, Horticulture, or an equivalent discipline is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
- EXPERIENCE: A minimum of four years of experience in turf management, construction and/or maintenance or related experience is preferred. At least two years of crew leader or supervisory experience is required. Experience operating golf course (or other sports turf) mowers, backhoes, skid loaders, spraying equipment, tractors and/or other related equipment is required.
- LICENSE:A valid Kansas Driver's License is required. Employee must be able to acquire a Kansas Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification in category 3B within 6 months of employment.
